Why Framamèmes?
Framamèmes lets you create your own memes using images that are published under a free license. The site is available in English and in French. The memes are generated without watermarks or digital markings, and the generator itself is published under a free license.
The License of a Meme
The vast majority of memes are based on a set of non-free images. While in practice, the free sharing of these images is tolerated to a certain degree, in theory, such sharing is not permitted under traditional copyright law! The phenomenon of viral images has developed “in spite of” the historically very restrictive laws governing copyright: in a way, this is yet another example of how out of step traditional copyright law is with modern practices stemming from digital cultures.
For example, the “Anakin & Padme” meme uses screenshots from the film Attack of the Clones in the Star Wars series, a film for which the exclusive rights are held by the entertainment multinational Disney. It is undoubtedly unrealistic to imagine Disney taking legal action against every single person sharing variations of this meme; however, it would likely be risky to use this meme in a publication or project with a certain level of visibility.
To allow you to freely share your favorite memes, Framasoft offers this series of free alternatives to several well-known memes: in France, the homeland of Framasoft, we benefit from what is commonly referred to as “the right to parody.” (Article L 122-5 of the Intellectual Property Code). These are, in fact, certain exceptions to copyright law that apply specifically to caricature, parody, and pastiche. The meme versions you’ll find here are drawings that fall into the latter category and can therefore be made available to you under a free license.
Author
The drawings are created by Gee on a graphics tablet using the free and open-source software Inkscape. No generative AI is used, the drawings are 100% human-created art, funded entirely through independent crowdfunding—which you can also contribute to.
Licenses
The drawings are licensed under Creative Commons 0: this is the most permissive free license and the one that most closely approximates the public domain, which seemed like an appropriate choice for viral images that now belong far more to the collective imagination than to any specific rights holders.
The fonts used are also free:
- Anton, licensed under the SIL Open Font License (OFL), chosen for its similarity to the Impact font—which is traditionally used for memes but is not free (owned by Microsoft);
- FreeSans, licensed under the GNU FreeFont;
- FreeSerif, licensed under the GNU FreeFont;
- FreeMono, licensed under the GNU FreeFont license;
- Bad Comic, licensed under the SIL Open Font License (OFL).
Adding Memes
To ensure visual consistency, Gee takes care of creating all memes, so it is not possible to submit new meme templates (note, however, that you can import your own templates locally). Gee regularly adds new memes: to find out when a new meme is available, you can follow the RSS feed.
